Amadeus shares details of its ‘most sustainable ship ever’

Amadeus River Cruises has shared details of its newest ship, Amadeus Amara, which it claims will be its “most sustainable ever”.

The line said the ship, due to launch in July 2025, has an “innovative lightweight construction” and an “exceptionally shallow draft in this category of ship” which enable it to remain operational even in fluctuating water levels.

This reduced water resistance helps minimise fuel consumption, said the line, adding the sustainable design is further enhanced by its “efficient” hull shape, a fuel-saving autopilot and solar panels on the sun deck.

Amadeus hopes to offer passengers “even more space on the river” when they sail on Amara, which has a 164-passenger capacity across three decks.

Another feature of the ship is the “state-of-the-art steering system” which automatically adjusts to currents, water levels, ship traffic, wind speeds and wave conditions.

Amadeus said this maximises propulsion efficiency, reduces emissions and minimises vibrations on board.

Additionally, solar energy is harnessed for electricity generation, further reducing the ship’s impact on the environment.

“Amadeus Amara is not only a technical masterpiece but also a true gem for our guests,” said Martina Lüftner, founder and managing director of Amadeus.

“The elegant interior design and indoor pool at the stern will be among the new comfort highlights. Twelve spacious suites feature walk-out balconies and cosy reading nooks, while the 70 standard cabins mostly offer drop-down panoramic windows and luxurious bathrooms.”

Amara’s maiden voyage is scheduled for early July 2025 on the Danube.

To celebrate the launch, Amadeus has packaged up some of the earliest departures with flights, along with a Danube Christmas Markets cruise.
