The highly awaited console is set to feature an expanded screen and innovative tools for social gaming.

Nintendo has officially confirmed the launch of its highly awaited Switch 2 console, scheduled for release on June 5.

Initially announced as under development in January, the new console features an upgraded, larger, high-quality screen and innovative magnetic detachable controls.

Nintendo announced that the new console will feature a variety of social enhancements, including GameChat which is a tool enabling players to voice or video chat with friends during gameplay. This gives players access to have an interactive experience within friends.

The Japanese gaming giant has also confirmed that the new console will allow players to share a game and collaborate with up to three friends, even if those friends don’t own the game themselves.

The highly anticipated console succeeds the original Nintendo Switch, which has been a massive hit among gaming enthusiasts since its 2017 debut. Its hybrid design combines home and mobile gaming, enabling players to carry the screen and detachable controllers on the go or dock the device at home for use with a TV.

Since its 2017 launch, the Nintendo Switch has achieved remarkable sales, reaching approximately 150 million units worldwide.

Alongside backwards compatibility for some original Switch games, the Switch 2 will introduce “Switch 2 Edition” titles – upgraded versions of popular games, optimised to take advantage of the new console’s capabilities.

Nintendo announced a range of new games for their upcoming console during a recent livestream. Among these was “Mario Kart World,” a significant departure for the series, presenting an open-world experience.

Prior to the console’s official launch, gamers worldwide will have the opportunity to experience the product firsthand at Nintendo’s global events, with London’s Excel hosting a session between April 11th and 13th.

According to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, the Switch 2 represents a “leap forward” in the company’s trajectory and the gaming experience for its customers.

“Building upon eight years of innovation and player feedback from the Nintendo Switch,” he stated, “the Nintendo Switch 2 represents the next evolution of adaptable home and portable gaming.”

“Nintendo Switch 2 introduces new features that expand the possibilities of gaming experiences.” He continued, “I truly believe this is a leap forward in our journey of putting smiles on the faces of everyone that Nintendo touches.”

The Nintendo Switch 2’s promise of enhanced experiences, backwards compatibility, and innovative ‘Switch 2 Edition’ titles signals a significant evolution for Nintendo. With global hands-on events generating excitement and a strong lineup of launch titles like ‘Mario Kart World,’ the stage is set for a new era of gaming.

As we eagerly anticipate its release, it’s clear that Nintendo aims to build upon the original Switch’s success, delivering a console designed to captivate both longtime fans and a new generation of players. The future of hybrid gaming looks bright, and we’ll be here to track every step of this exciting journey.
