"As They Made Us"

Mayim Bialik steps behind the camera in “As They Made Us.” Best known for her on-screen work in “The Big Bang Theory” and “Blossom,” the Emmy-nominated actress and “Jeopardy!” host is making her feature directorial debut with the dramedy about a divorced mother of two who is struggling to balance the demands of her dysfunctional family and a new romance.

“Glee” alumna Dianna Agron, recently seen in “Shiva Baby,” plays Abigail, a writer who is working on a story about grief. A trailer for the pic reveals that her father (Dustin Hoffman) is dying — a fate her mother (Candice Bergen) refuses to accept. She’s too busy channeling her energy into firing his caregivers and researching meditation.

Abigail is falling for her landscaper (Chu Cary), but her mother’s constant demands are getting in the way of their budding romance. “So your life is just always like this?” he asks. “Emotions, intensity, you having to fix everything?” Abigail doesn’t bother trying to deny the reality of her situation. “It’s all I know,” she says.

Bialik received four Emmy noms during her tenure on “The Big Bang Theory.” Her other acting credits include “Call Me Kat” and “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” She previously helmed the 2019 short “Thankful.”

“As They Made Us” drops in theaters and on VOD April 8.
