Where is The White Lotus season four set? France filming locations revealed

The highly anticipated fourth season of The White Lotus has started filming – and this time, the cast is unpacking in France.

Despite destination speculation favouring Tanzania, Mexico and the French Alps, filming for season four has commenced on the Côte d'Azur.

Unlike the first three seasons, the Emmy-winning series isn’t setting up in a Four Seasons Resort.

Where season one explored money, season two sex and season three spirituality and death, season four will see a new group of guests during a week of the Cannes Film Festival.

With a host of new characters from Helena Bonham Carter to Steve Coogan holed up on an annual trip to the HBO drama’s dysfunctional hotels, here are the paradise destinations behind the wild whodunnit anthology.

Production plans are usually tight-lipped on official set locations, but ahead of filming the hit TV show’s fourth season, the ultra-luxury resorts used as the backdrop to the White Lotus hotel chain’s latest trials and tribulations have been revealed.

While fans found out in September last year that the fourth chapter of The White Lotus would be prominently set in France, HBO has now confirmed the hotels hosting this season’s chaos.

According to production, filming has started on the French Riviera with cameras rolling in Cannes, St Tropez and Monaco.

“Filming will also take place in Paris, though the story will remain along the Côte d'Azur,” said HBO.

Doubling as the White Lotus du Cap, the Airelles Château de la Messardière – a chateau built in 1904 as a wedding gift from cognac merchant Gabriel Dupuy d'Angeac to his daughter Louise — sits alone on a hill, “surrounded by umbrella pine trees with superyachts anchored in glistening bays beyond”, said US travel editor Ted Thornhill following his stay.

As for the White Lotus Cannes, Hôtel Martinez will take centre stage. The legendary five-star palace hotel on Boulevard de la Croisette is renowned for both its private beach and celebrity clientele during festival season.

The relocation to Europe for season three follows stints in North America and Asia during the show’s first three seasons.

As the respective episodes aired, the allure of star-studded casts and the idyllic settings saw the resorts trend as the place to go for a luxury getaway and a boom in bookings spiked at the service-centric Four Seasons Resorts seen on screen.

The 2021 series saw a tropical debut in Hawaii at the fictitious White Lotus Resort.

Set at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, characters’ – including complex hotel manager Armond, emotionally volatile Tanya and tech exec Nicole’s – tumultuous travels were based in and around the Hawaiian “Valley Isle”.

Covid restrictions limited filming locations largely to the confines of the hotel, but some backdrops saw guests venture to the golden sands of the neighbouring Wailea Beach when outside of the infamous (and invented) “Pineapple Suite”.

The cast jetted to Italy for a series shrouded in Sicily’s amorous mythology, and the San Domenico Palace, Taormina – a member of the Four Seasons group on the northeast coast – formed the facade of the second instalment of The White Lotus.

Free from the pandemic measures of series one, the towns of Taormina, Noto and Cefalù also took centre stage for the twists and turns of the seven Sicilian episodes orbiting the five-star hotel of horrors.

Guests bedded down in Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui during the show’s third instalment in Thailand, which aired in February 2025.

Three Anantara resorts were used as filming locations, with many shots filmed at Anantara Bophut on the island of Koh Samui for serene beaches, lotus ponds, wellness parlours and luxury accommodations.

Anatara Lawana’s Singing Bird Lounge – a treehouse-style bar – is the backdrop of one of the most distinctive settings in the show’s third chapter for a bar scene.

Over on another Thai island, a third Anantara property, the Mai Khao Phuket Villas, was used during filming for the fictional Wellness Sanctuary and Spa, as well as Belinda’s (Natasha Rothwell) room.

The white sands and tranquil waters of Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui also featured as the Ratliff Family villa, the three ladies’ villa, Rick (Walton Goggins) and Chelsea’s (Aimee Lou Wood) room, the breakfast and lunch restaurants, the pool, beach and various common areas, gyms and paths, as well as the spirit house.
