Why Looking After Your Nervous System Matters (Especially This Time of Year)

Yin Yoga on a Bolster

This time of year, a lot of people start to feel it.

A bit run down.
Energy dipping.
More colds and little viruses doing the rounds.

It’s easy to default to the usual advice.

More vitamin C.
More supplements.
Push through and keep going.

Some of that can help.

But there’s something more fundamental going on underneath it.

Your body can’t recover if it doesn’t feel safe to

Your immune system doesn’t work in isolation.

It’s deeply connected to your nervous system.

If your body is constantly in “go mode”
rushing, thinking, doing, reacting. It’s not prioritising repair.

It’s prioritising getting you through the day.

Which means things like recovery, immunity and healing get pushed down the list.

This is why you often get sick when you finally slow down

You might have noticed this before.

You push through a busy period.
Keep going. Keep going. Keep going.

Then you stop… and suddenly you get sick.

That’s not bad timing.

That’s your body finally having the space to deal with what it’s been holding.

Supporting your nervous system is supporting your immunity

When the body shifts out of constant activation and into a more settled state, it can start to do what it’s meant to do.

Repair
Restore
Rebalance

This is where practices like yoga become more than just movement.

They become a way of helping your system shift gears.

What actually helps

It doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make the biggest difference.

Slower practices like Yin that give your body time to soften
Yoga Nidra that allows deep, non-sleep rest
Vinyasa that helps move energy and clear mental load
Sleep (more than you think you need)

Moments where you’re not rushing, fixing or achieving anything

Just letting the system settle.

You don’t need to wait until you’re sick

Most people only prioritise rest when their body forces them to.

But this time of year is a good reminder not to wait for that point.

You can support your system before it gets there.

By noticing when you’re tired
By taking your foot off the gas a little sooner
By letting your practice meet you where you are

A different kind of strength

There’s a kind of strength in pushing through.

But there’s another kind in knowing when to slow down.

This season tends to ask for the second one.

And often, that’s what actually keeps you well.
