Twice a year we pass through the Equinox, a moment where day and night are equal.
It is often talked about in symbolic or spiritual ways, but seasonal shifts also have a very real effect on the body. Many people notice they feel slightly different around this time of year. A little more tired. A little more reflective. Sometimes even a bit unsettled or restless.
That is not just in your head.
Our bodies are deeply connected to natural rhythms, especially light, temperature and daily cycles. When those rhythms begin to shift, our internal systems adjust as well.
Light, rhythm and the body’s internal clock
One of the biggest regulators of the body is light.
Sunlight influences our circadian rhythm, which is the internal clock that helps regulate sleep, hormones, mood and energy levels. As the seasons change and the amount of daylight shifts, the brain quietly recalibrates these rhythms.
It is a subtle process, but it can influence how we feel day to day. Sleep patterns might change. Energy can fluctuate. Focus and mood can feel a little different.
Sometimes that slightly unsettled feeling people notice during seasonal transitions is simply the body adjusting to a new rhythm.
The nervous system notices the shift too
Seasonal changes can also highlight something else that many of us carry quietly through the year. Fatigue.
Modern life keeps the nervous system fairly active most of the time. Work, responsibilities, screens and constant information all ask for our attention.
When the seasons shift, it can become more noticeable that the system has been running a little fast.
In many traditional cultures, seasonal transitions were natural moments to slow down, reflect and restore energy before moving into the next part of the year.
Most of us rarely give ourselves that pause.
Why yoga can feel especially supportive right now
This is where yoga tends to meet the body exactly where it needs support.
Movement improves circulation and helps regulate hormones. Breathing practices influence the vagus nerve, which helps shift the nervous system out of constant doing mode and back toward a more balanced state.
Slower practices such as Yin create space for the body to release physical tension while encouraging the nervous system to soften and reset.
It is one reason many people find themselves craving slower, grounding practices when the seasons begin to change.
Often the body is simply asking for recalibration.
A natural moment to reset
The Equinox is often described as a moment of balance in nature.
Equal light. Equal darkness.
It can also serve as something simpler. A quiet checkpoint in the year. A chance to notice where your energy is going and how you are feeling in yourself.
Not to overhaul your life or make dramatic changes. Just to pause for a moment.
For many people, stepping onto the mat becomes exactly that.
A breath. A reset. A chance to come back to centre before stepping into the next season.
And sometimes that is all the body really needs.
