The world of mechanical keyboards is wonderful but confusing. Mechanical clicky keyboards don’t just give a satisfying click when you type—they’re also incredibly tactile. The keys themselves are built to last, and typing on a mechanical keyboard leads to less fatigue, and much faster response time compared to a regular laptop keyboard.

But getting started with mechanical keyboards can seem like a task. Which keyboard base do you use; which kind of keys are the best? If you just want to try out a mechanical keyboard without worrying about all that, get the Keychron K2. I’ve used the Keychron K6 for years now, and if I could go back, I would get the K2 instead. And for Amazon Prime Day sale, it’s discounted to $55.99 (down from $79.99). Given that customizable mechanical keyboards cost upwards of $100 to get started, this is a good deal.

Why I recommend the Keychron K2 keyboard

Keychron is a reputable brand that has a history of making some stellar mechanical keyboards. They work really well with both Mac and Windows over Bluetooth. And you can also connect it to your computer over USB-C. Keychron also gives you keys for both macOS and Windows that you can easily swap out (Command key for Mac, Control key for Windows, for example). You can connect up to three devices and switch between them using keyboard shortcuts. (I use this all the time when switching between my Mac and PC.)

The keyboard can last up to 72 hours on battery, which is around seven days of full-day usage. Mac users will be happy to know that it supports Mac’s function keys. And there’s also a white LED backlight (just like Mac keyboards).

What do you think so far?

The K2 is 75% the size of a full keyboard, meaning it has the same layout as a laptop, but it’s not squished in. All the keys are full-size, and have good spacing as well. Plus, there are extra buttons for Page up, Page down, Home and End on the side. And most importantly, it has full-sized arrow keys—the one thing that’s missing from my K6 keyboard, where the arrow keys are awkwardly squished below the Enter button.

This version of the K2 keyboard features Gateron G Pro Brown switches, which are the middle ground of switches. Red switches are smooth, with no clicking sound, while the Blue switches are the really clicky ones you associate mechanical keyboards with. Brown switches offer a slight bump that you can feel, which I find to be the sweet spot. (If you don’t like the idea of brown switches, the silent Red switches model is also on sale for the same price.)
