Uber is actively working to increase the number of electric vehicles used for rides and deliveries on its platform. To assist drivers in transitioning to electric cars, Uber plans to introduce an AI-powered chatbot powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o. This chatbot will be available to drivers in the United States starting in early 2025.
The chatbot answers drivers’ questions about electric vehicles, offering valuable information and support.
Initially, the assistant will provide information about electric vehicles, such as charging locations and vehicle recommendations. However, Uber plans to expand the assistant’s capabilities to address other driver-related tasks.
At the Go-Get event in London on Tuesday, Uber revealed that they are integrating OpenAI’s latest cutting-edge model, capable of engaging in human-like conversations and making informed decisions based on text, audio, and visual information.
Furthermore, drivers can easily access the AI assistant by navigating to the home screen of the Uber driver app. The chatbot will regularly update drivers with the latest information, ensuring they can always access the most current data.
Uber emphasises that the assistant can provide tailored responses based on individual driver needs, local city information, and available government incentives, offering a personalised experience.
According to an Uber spokesperson, drivers will eventually have the option to communicate with the chatbot verbally, not just through text messages. The chatbot will also be able to respond to driver questions audibly.
In addition, the specific languages supported by the AI assistant have not been disclosed. Uber has indicated they will provide more information about the available languages closer to the launch date. OpenAI has stated that GPT-4o is capable of supporting over 50 languages.
Uber plans to launch an “EV mentorship program” alongside their AI assistant rollout. This program will incentivize highly rated drivers with EV experience to become mentors for drivers interested in learning more about owning an electric vehicle. Mentors will receive cash rewards and other benefits.
Uber’s OpenAI announcement was included alongside other electric vehicles and climate-related news at the Go-Get event. This year’s showcase emphasized climate initiatives, and Uber introduced several new features and updates designed to facilitate the selection of electric vehicles for riders and drivers.
For instance, Uber Green, which offers hybrid or electric vehicles in over 180 markets, is expanding to include an EV-only option in 40 cities. This feature will soon be available in more cities. Cities where riders can now choose all-electric rides include New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Paris, Auckland, and others. When available nearby, riders can set their preference in the Uber app to match with electric vehicles.
Uber’s commitment to electric vehicles is evident in its AI assistant and EV mentorship program. These initiatives support drivers and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable transportation ecosystem.
