Updated: Birmingham airport reopens after security incident
Aircraft ‘landed safely’ and all passengers and crew disembarked
Birmingham airport has reopened after it temporarily suspended operations because of a “security incident” on an aircraft.
A spokesperson for the airport confirmed the suspension on Tuesday afternoon (April 16) and added: “Birmingham airport reopened at 1800 hours following a security incident on an aircraft.
“All passengers and crew disembarked safely.
“Customers are advised to check with their airline, or on the Birmingham Airport website, before checking in due to potential delays.”
An ITV news report said the temporary suspension followed reports of a suspicious item being found on an Aer Lingus Regional flight between Birmingham and Belfast.
The Independent said an aircraft from the Irish airline departed from Birmingham this afternoon but returned due to the “security incident”.
The newspaper said that footage shared on social media shows several emergency vehicles on the runway, with some flights delayed as a result of the incident.
